There is no dearth of digital marketers today. A quick search online will reveal the names and companies of numerous digital marketers, all of whom claim to be the perfect digital partner for your brand. Yet, on the ground, only a few are able to deliver the goods. The reason is simple: it takes a lot to be a great digital marketer as opposed to a good digital marketer. It is not enough that a digital marketer knows the tricks and tips, it is also equally important to add your own innovative spirit to accepted modes of doing things. So first you need to be a digital marketing expert, then a good digital marketer and finally the great or the best digital marketer.
So what are those extra titbits that take you that extra mile from good to great? Let’s find out!

Ability to Analyse
This one ranks as the number one on my list of must-haves. The data is there for everyone. The stats are available free, most of the time at least. Any digital marketer can collect and collate data to come up with findings and study trends. However, it is only the great digital marketer who analyses it best and draws lessons that would otherwise lie unattended. The ability to analyse ensures that you are always ahead of the curve, always doing something before any of your competitors touches it.
Creativity is King and Queen
By creativity, I don’t mean the process of writing alone. The designing aspect is equally important. For example, when you visit a website, it is the layout of the site that draws you first, not the written word. A great marketer needs to have a fine eye for detail, just like a good director of a film. You need to look at your website or blog from the perspective of a digital marketer and an average web visitor. The product on your hand should satisfy both ends of the spectrum.
Innovation is Necessary
You cannot surge ahead by doing exactly what the others are doing. The tools and access to technology are more or less the same for everyone in the arena. Your aim as a digital marketer is to make sure that you innovate with the resources available on your table. Find out hidden methods that are untapped and hence, pregnant with infinite potential. You can look at other forms of marketing for inspiration. Offline marketers have their own methods which can be used as analogies for your own digital ends. Think and execute your plans.
There is no substitute for experience, like I feel that I’m more confident of my abilities as a digital marketer now than when I started out. But that will only enrich your skills as a marketer. You need to have the above-mentioned qualities right from the very scratch. I’m deliberately not pointing out the necessities of hard work and clean work ethics because I’m sure that you know that they go without saying!
Identify Customer Segment
It is no doubt a tricky job to identify the right segment of customer with the help of available metrics like, conversion data chart, web analytics, surveys, interviews, social media monitoring and several other behavioral and psychographic data resource. Not many marketers have the skill polished enough to identify the best segment. Only seasoned content marketers have the efficiency to identify the right segmentation data and maintain targeted customer profile.
Content Planning Through Multiple Channels
Single channel marketing procedures involving tools like, PPC, SEO, mobile, etc cannot be quite beneficial for customer segments. Customers these days seek information on any matter through multiple channels and it is wise to offer them the answer through them. So, a multi-channel content plan is important for providing the best answer through all the marketing channels. People expert in integration and coordination can cope with the process being disseminated through all those channels, simultaneously.
Modern day marketing cannot proceed with their strategies and implement them properly ignoring social media completely. This is the platform where communities are built on the basis of common interest of a particular group of people. In order to influence a customer segment, it is very important to have the ability to influence the group that influences its customer base.
